Late in term 1 we have been looking at reading time on both analog and digital clocks. There are some great sites with activities you can play to help you improve your time reading. Here are some examples.
At the moment in term 1 grade 4 is looking at five digit numbers, where they sit on number lines, and how to round them. Here are some rounding activities you can try.
Powerlines Puzzle - although the numbers are single digit, each level is a challenging addition puzzle, making all the lines add up to the same total
Mayan Math - pretty simple graphics but goes up to two digit addition
Speed Grid Challenge - these can be adjusted to set the number of problems and the time limit - quite challenging identifying two addends to make the nominated total. The third level is rather difficult!
If you are in grade 4, you should practice to become confident with all of the third grade tables, as well as four times, six times, and perhaps the eight times tables. For most people this will require plenty of practice so you should start as soon as possible!
We're only in term 1 at the moment but you will want to start your times tables practice as soon as possible! By the middle of the year, you should be becoming confident with a number of times tables, especially the two, three, five and ten times tables. What does this mean? It means you should be able to recall the answer to any of these tables within about 3 seconds. This will take a fair bit of practice for most people.
To practice your times tables, the following games and activities are helpful:
Oswego Math Magician - set the times tables you want to practise and try to beat the clock!
Don't forget to login to StudyLadder and use the tasks there to practice your maths.
Math Lines is a great game to practice your rapid addition facts.
Capacity
Later in the year we will look at capacity, investigating litres and fractions of litres (1/2, 1/4). There are some fun capacity puzzles you might like to try, or perhaps you already solved them at school and would like to show your parents. Try the following links:
